PROTEGIENDO AL ENEMIGO / EL INVITADO (SAFE HOUSE)

AGENCIA CENTRAL DE INTELIGENCIA ESTADOUNIDENSE: ¡¿PUTREFACTA HASTA LA MÉDULA?!.
CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY: ROTTEN TO THE CORE?!

Esta pelicula es maravillosa porque:
This movie is wonderful because:

Título: LA CIA Y EL CULTO DEL ESPIONAJE [LA CIA Y EL CULTO A LA INTELIGENCIA] (THE CIA AND THE CULT OF INTELLIGENCE). Autores: VICTOR MARCHETTI, JOHN D. MARKS. Editor:
Coronet Books, Hodder and Stoughton. Londres, 1976, 446 páginas.

Páginas 152-153:

"The CIA assumed the role of coordinator of all U.S. government counterinsurgency activities in Latin America, and other agencies - particularly AID, with its police-training programms, and the Defense Department, with its military-assistance and civic-action programs - provided the CIA with cover and additional resources. Much of the agency´s manpower for Latin American special operations was furnished by the U.S. Army´s Special Forces; small detachments of Green Berets were regularly placed under CIA control. These soldiers usually came from the Third Batallion of the Seventh Special Forces, located at Fort Gulick in the Canal Zone. The agency had its own paramilitary base in the Canal Zone, and even when the Special Forces carried on missions outside the CIA´s direct command, agency operators kept in close touch with what was going on. Since 1962 more than 600 Special Forces "mobile training teams" have been dispatched to the rest of Latin America from Fort Gulick, either under direct CIA control or under Pentagon auspices. Green Berets participated, for example, in what was the CIA´s single large-scale Latin American intervention of the post-Bay of Pigs era. This ocurred in the mid-1960s, when the agency secretly came to the aid of the Peruvian government, then plagued by guerrilla troubles in its remote eastern regions. Unable to cope adequately with the insurgent movement, Lima had turned to the U.S. government for aid, which was immediately and covertly forthcoming.
The agency financed the construction of what one experienced observer described as "a miniature Fort Bragg" in the troubled Peruvian jungle region, complete with mess halls, classrooms, barracks, administrative buildings, parachute jump towers, amphibious landing facilities, and all the other accoutrements of paramilitary operations. Helicopters were furnished under cover of official military aid programs, and the CIA flew in arms and other combat equipment. Training was provided by the agency´s Special Operations Division personnel and by Green Beret instructors on loan from the Army.
As the training progressed and the proficiency of the counterguerrilla troops increased, the Peruvian government grew uneasy. Earlier, the national military commanders had been reluctant to provide personnel for the counterinsurgency force, and thus the CIA had been required to recruit its fighting manpower from among the available local populace. By paying higher wages than the army (and offering fringe benefits, better training, and "esprit de corps" the agency soon developed a relatively efficient fighting force. In short order, the local guerrillas were largely wiped out.
A few months later, when Peru was celebrating its chief national holiday, the authorities refused to allow the CIA-trained troops into the capital for the annual military parade. Instead, they had to settle for marching through streets of a dusty provincial town, in a satellite observance of the great day. Realizing that many a Latin American regime had been toppled by a crack regiment, Peru´s leaders were unwilling to let the CIA force even come to Lima, and the government soon moved to dismantle the unit.
As large and successful as the CIA´s Peruvian operation might have been, it was outweighed in importance among agency leaders by a smaller intervention in Bolivia that ocurred in 1967; for the CIA was out for bigger game in Bolivia that just local insurgents. The target was Che Guevara".

The Observer,

A Seal is a member of one of the US navy's elite acronymic Sea Air and Land units, and Uncle Sam has given his official seal of approval for Seals to perform in this hi-tech, high testosterone combat movie set variously in the Philippines, east Africa, Latin America, Mexico and Ukraine. Instead of the likes of Sly Stallone and Charlie Sheen strutting their stuff in dark glasses and camouflage gear, armed to the teeth with state-of-the-art weaponry, the genuine articles in Act of Valour go into the field, but are credited only under their given names or noms de guerre (Rorke, Sonny, Ray, Ajay, Weimy). The villains are of course played by actors from the racial archetypes section of central casting.

The Seals are a formidable bunch who've undergone every form of vigorous training available to man except a course at acting school, but in their brief domestic scenes with their dedicated, long-suffering wives they do well enough. They are steeped in military tradition, patriotic fervour and sacrifice, and twice there's talk of military dedication "running in the blood". Someone also makes a speech explaining how "a single twig will break, but a bundle of twigs is strong", a quote from the Indian warrior Tecumseh and a reference to the fasces, the birch rods surrounding an axe, which was the symbol of power and authority in the Roman empire and provided Italian fascism with its name in the 20th century. Unlike the swastika, the use of the fasces has not been discredited in the States.

Act of Valour has a scenario, presumably officially endorsed, in which a team of Seals confronts an international terrorist plot involving Filipinos, the Ukrainian mafia, al-Qaida and Hispanic drug cartels. Suicide bombers train to infiltrate the US wearing the latest form of deadly explosive vests that scatter hundreds of bullets followed by horrendous explosions. The targets include Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The shoot-outs are realistically staged, the body count is roughly one American to around 20 of their foes, and this being a propaganda picture on identical lines to those of the second world war, there's no room for any sort of respect for the enemy or any understanding of his motives. For this reason, though not for this alone, Act of Valour is a distasteful and foolish film, a recruiting poster that might well carry the slogan "Join the Navy, Travel the World and Kill People". We've come a long way from the early days of this century when the Pentagon arranged screenings of Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers so that US armed forces might learn something from it, especially on the issue of "how to win a battle against terrorism and lose the war of ideas".

The CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film and Television

On Tuesday, March 27 at 5 p.m. the library will host its Spring Faculty Speak with author Dr. Tricia Jenkins as guest speaker.

What very few people know about the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is that it has been actively engaged in shaping the content of film and television, especially since it established an entertainment industry liaison program in the mid-1990s.

The CIA in Hollywood offers the first full-scale investigation of the relationship between the Agency and the film and television industries. Jenkins draws on numerous interviews with the CIA’s public affairs staff, operations officers and historians, as well as with Hollywood technical consultants, producers and screenwriters who have worked with the Agency to uncover the nature of the CIA’s role in Hollywood. In particular, she delves into the Agency’s and its officers’ involvement in the production of The Agency, In the Company of Spies, Alias, The Recruit, The Sum of All Fears, Enemy of the State, Syriana, The Good Shepherd and more. Her research reveals the significant influence that the CIA now wields in Hollywood and raises important and troubling questions about the ethics and legality of a government agency using popular media to manipulate its public image.

Dr. Tricia Jenkins is an assistant professor in the Film, Television and Digital Media Department at Texas Christian University. She has published several articles on the CIA in Hollywood and on the spy genre more broadly.

Diapositiva 7)
Título: LOS BENEFICIOS DE TRABAJAR CON HOLLYWOOD

GUERRA PSICOLÓGICA y ESTUDIO DEL ESCENARIO DE UNA AMENAZA

Diapositiva 8)
Título: ASPECTOS PROBLEMÁTICOS INHERENTES A LA COLABORACIÓN ENTRE LA AGENCIA CENTRAL DE INTELIGENCIA ESTADOUNIDENSE (CIA) Y HOLLYWOOD.
