The Normalization of Covert Action. Bibliography
This book analyses representations in Hollywood film of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
As probably the best known of the many different intelligence agencies of the US, the CIA is an exceptionally well known national and international icon or even “brand,” one that exercises a powerful influence on the imagination of many citizens throughout the world as well as on the creative minds of movie-makers, novelists and investigative journalists. It has also been the model for, sometimes actively involved as consultant in, the formation of many other intelligence agencies around the world, even the agencies of some of the countries that emerged from the demise of the Soviet Union after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The CIA may also be seen as an important component of the institutional armory of both US “national” self-defense as well as of the promotion of “national” interest abroad, generally covertly through practices of espionage and analysis as well as by means of military, political and propagandistic subversion of non-US regimes, or groups within non-US regimes, that are considered unfriendly to the United States.
The book examines movies sampled from the each of five decades: the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and explores four main issues: the relative prominence of the CIA; the extent to which these movies appeared to be overtly political; the degree to which they were favorable or unfavorable to the CIA; and their relative attitude to the “business” of intelligence. A final chapter considers the question: do these Hollywood texts appear to function ideologically to “normalize” the CIA? If so, might this suggest the further hypothesis that many CIA movies assist audiences with reconciling two sometimes fundamental opposites: often gruesome covert CIA activity for questionable goals and at enormous expense, on the one hand, and the values and procedures of democratic society, on the other.
This interdisciplinary book will be of much interest to studnets of the CIA/Intelligence Studies, media and film studies, US politics and IR in general.

Intelligence Liaison between the FBI and State, 1940–44
Effective Interagency Collaboration
G. Gregg Webb
The post-9/11 debate over intelligence reform has been framed as a response to the intelligence “failures” that led to that infamous day. Many commentators and policymakers have compared America’s current intelligence shortcomings to past disasters, such as Pearl Harbor in 1941 or the Bay of Pigs in 1961. The impulse to identify common errors in individual judgment and interagency action between the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001 and previous tragedies cannot be ignored. Yet, dissecting mistakes should be only part of this nation’s strategy to retool its Intelligence Community for the fight against international terrorism.
Another important perspective for planning intelligence reforms comes from past instances of effective cooperation among agencies. Just as America stands to benefit from coolly analyzing intelligence missteps, careful consideration of intelligence successes also can be constructive. This article surveys one of the earliest, most extensive, and most successful examples of interdepartmental intelligence collaboration in American history. In a community famous for its deep fissures and debilitating rivalries, the working relationship forged between the Department of State and the Special Intelligence Service of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Latin America during World War II is both unique and instructive.
