1. Theoretically, a paranoid conspiratorial phone call.

Leonidas Zegarra, a great creator who chose filmmaking as his main tool, is the representative of a production style favored in Peru among the audiovisual artists: the artisanal petit bourgeoisie film mode of production. While talking to Mr. Zegarra in La Paz, Bolivia, after a day of shooting Maria y los niños pobres (2010), I would acusse him of spending too much money in the production. Leonidas Zegarra would answer that if he didn't spend money renting a camera, it would look like as if he was playing.  I insisted that the cheapest the better and that a producer should try to maximize the financial resources, and that with a cell phone would be enough. He couldn't stop a big smile appearing in his face while he continued counter arguing. To me, he wanted to show off with the size of his camera. Our collaboration, Theoretically, a paranoid conspiratorial phone call, allowed me to test several of my hypothesis and I'm grateful to Mr. Zegarra due to the great freedom he conceded to me. It seems that his movies and his persona may become even more famous as the time flows and provides a better viewpoint to evaluate what he did when he did it. In the Peruvian struggle among artists who thrive in the creative world and censors who want to weaponize filmmaking as a tool of mass indoctrination, Leonidas Zegarra is an example of bold artistic independence that needs to be promoted. Naturally, there are social forces defined by their social positions (their amounts of economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capitals) behind these projects. Describing this field would be an exciting scholar endeavor! The most funny thing here is that the bourgeoisie creates a totalitarian ideological tool and after that offers the field of art as an imaginary solution! Hi-hi-hi! I cannot delude myself!

Jorge Villacorta.
